Pespective on Thanksgiving

by Kate Adamson

From last month’s newsletter you already know about my cooking ability. It has always been a dilemma about how our Thanksgiving meal will get prepared. (Cindy, I could sure use your help in the kitchen!) This year my family is most thankful for the fact that I am again going to refrain from trying to cook Thanksgiving dinner. (Can’t you just see me trying to stuff a slick, cold 14 lb. turkey carcass with one hand? Not a pretty sight!) We are so thankful for Marsha Collins, my faithful housekeeper and children’s nanny, who will prepare our turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Marsha said I can help – by keeping quiet and staying out of her way in the kitchen. I can do that!

Boy, is my family thankful that I am not cooking – and I am thankful for you – my family, friends, business associates, audiences, so many of you who have touched my life, and of course, my (blush) fans (yes, you know who you are, and I love you!) along with a good turkey dinner.

As a native New Zealander, who only earlier this year became an American citizen, I didn't grow up celebrating the traditional Thanksgiving holiday. But I like Thanksgiving because it reawakens our appreciation for our roots. It’s a holiday where families truly do come together.

As we approach the holiday season, there has always been a part of me that wishes I was spending them with my family down under. But 22 holiday seasons have come and gone and I have not been back to New Zealand for the holidays – it is just too far away. When I’m opening gifts here, they have already celebrated Christmas day, and it’s summer there!

So, again I am stuck – paralyzed – unable to keep in touch like I want. Or, am I? This year I am not only thankful for family and friends, but also for modern technology and e-mail that keeps me in touch with you – my loved ones – and most importantly, lets YOU keep in touch with me!

The holidays are a great time to reconnect with our roots – old friends and family. If you can’t afford it, forget three-dollar cards and budget-busting postage. Instead, send warm wishes to those you love through e-mail. It doesn’t mean that you “spam” everyone with one of those lengthy Christmas letters that are hard to finish reading. Simply write a brief note – a personal note – to as many as you can. It only takes five minutes and you don’t have to lick, stick and run to the post office or stand in long lines. Even last-minute notes on Christmas Eve – or holiday wishes on Christmas day, will get there in time!

Many of you are spread throughout the world receiving these postcards from the USA to New Zealand, Australia, Italy, England, Scotland and the list goes on. Isn’t it wonderful to know we can send a warm wish with the click of a button?

Well, I have to run now; it is time to prepare my Thanksgiving dinner. Let’s see, where is Marsha’s phone number – oh yes, it’s on my speed dial!

Happy Thanksgiving!
