May is National Stroke Awareness Month. Stroke survivor and disability rights activist Kate Adamson is on a mission. That mission is to educate people about the facts and the myths, the symptoms, signs and treatment of stroke.
Kate Adamson, survivor of a catastrophic double brainstem stroke and President of Kate’s Journey, is on a mission. A mission to “educate and inform people that over 700,000 people suffer strokes every year, and it doesn’t just impact the elderly.”
”It's so important to know your body and be aware of stroke symptoms. I was a 33-year-old mother of two small children, and just about to start my own personal fitness club when I was struck down by a catastrophic stroke!” Adamson recounts her amazing story in her book, “Kate’s Journey: Triumph Over Adversity”, which recounts her experiences from the time she was placed on life support completely unable to communicate with the outside world, to her near complete recovery, which has been nothing short of miraculous.
“Stroke is the No. 3 cause of death and a leading cause of serious long term disability in America. But there are signs to watch for, and if you or someone you love does have a stroke, that doesn’t mean that life has to end. There is still hope and the potential for a full and happy life.”
Ms. Adamson is an internationally recognized disability advocate, national spokesperson for the American Stroke Association, and is currently traveling the country speaking to audiences about her stroke and recovery experience.
